Tales from the trails

Running Movies, Books, Magazines, Podcasts, etc.

With the Canadian showing of Spirit of the Marathon happening tonight, I was hoping to poll our collective consciousness about running related media - movies, books, magazines, podcasts, etc.

But, let's start with a review of Spirit of the Marathon because I know that many of us will be there watching tonight.

After that, please add in your two (or three) cents as to what the rest of us should read/watch/listen to.

Just got back from the Spirit of the Marathon. As someone who is going to participate in my first Boston experience in a little under two weeks, I was pretty excited to see some footage and hear the history (even if I already knew it - the soundtrack music always makes it more exciting). Overall, I think the movie was pretty well done, for what it is. The looked at all aspects of the continuum of marathoning, which was good. Being someone that loves the Chasing Kimbia type of analysis of high-end training, I felt that more about Kenya would have been good. More info on Deena Kastor and her training group would have fed my appetite, but hearing the "other runners for other reasons" stories rounded out the film and will give it broader appeal across the running audience. Some laugh out loud parts, mostly to do with incredulous spouses and spectators (the person holding the sign at the Chicago Marathon with "You're all crazy!!" scrawled in black sharpie was pretty amazing). I am not going to purchase the DVD, and I will stick with Saint Ralph or Prefontaine for my pre-race movies, but it was good to watch with running buddies all the same. We left wanting to do our own documentary - flashes of 215north.ca dancing in our heads.

What are the thoughts of others who might have caught the film this evening?

AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH>>>>>>>I forgot that it was showing.
That sucks.
How was it?

I did just get my hands on Barefoot Runner: The Life of Marathon Champion Abebe Bikila
There are a few books ahead of it, but I am looking forward to breaking its spine.

Awesome! I just finished The Greatest: The Haile Gebrselassie Story which was pretty inspiring as well. I am waiting to break the spine of Again to Carthage - that is for the week before Boston. I would love to read the Bikila story as he was one of Gebr's heroes.
