This should be the motto of the Mount Evans Ascent, which also happens to be 'America's Highest Road Race'.
Starting at Echo Lake, just outside of Idaho Springs, Colorado at 10,600 feet (3,230m) , the course climbs for 14.5 miles (23.3 km) up North America's highest paved road. The course takes you through montane, subalpine, and alpine environments to the summit of Mt. Evans at 14,264 ft (4,348m).
It is a spectacular venue, with many memorable four-legged spectators, such as Bighorn Sheep, Marm… Continue

Trying to pack everything up here.
That means closing some accounts, returning some stuff, training a new staff member for 5430 Sports, sending out masses of emails and getting in some runs on my favourite Boulder trails.
Yesterday was:
90 min AM trying to be as hilly as possible; PM 45 min up the Canyon
Today:
AM: 20 min warm up, then (3min/2EZ; 2hard/2EZ, 1minhard/1EZ)*2, 15 min EZ legs loosened up as I went
PM: 42 min with Matt, felt a bit light headed--it was SUPER hot

Yes, so I pulled a disappearing act, magical wasn't it?
A bit of travel to Vancouver for World Tri Champs: great run through Stanley, over the bridge, up the Capilano river, follwed by Grind...good long run.
Last week was a bit mental with me being the operations manager for my first triathlon, the 5430 Sprint triathlon, with 1,300 participants. It took place on Sunday and went well.
Highlight runs for the week were a great run on Switzerland trail and a killer treadmill session.

I always love the anticipation of that first 'race' effort...
A week ago I looked at the forecast and smiled..."Oh, it's going to be a muddy one!" I was almost giggling at the thought of slippin' and slidin' on Calgary Olympic Park's (COP) clay surface, which was scheduled to host the first Saab/Salomon 5 Peaks Series event in Alberta. From Monday to Saturday, the little 'weather display box' at Environment Canada website showed a grey cloud w/rain…and for once, it was true - Fun times was my f… Continue

Okay, so a few changes this week:
#1-I was accepted into a programme that I had wanted to get into, so it looks like I will be heading to Fredericton to attend the University of New Brunswick come September (Go Reds!)
Some very solid sessions the past few days:
Friday: easier day, 40 min with some strides--PM watched the Big 12 track meet 10,000 races--fun tactical races due to the altitude and most of the athletes doubling.
Saturday: 12 min wu then 5.7 mile uphill tempo up Flagstaff mou… Continue

I put on my first event last night, the Uni-Hill 2k was a success. A competitive men's field showed up, but watching the kids race was definitely a highlight. 4 year old running around, like the Monty Python "Twits Race" with the parents chasing them was hilarious, but still awesome:

Wow, a lot has happened the last 3 or so days since I last blogged. Some running, a race, some higher elevations, a mountain lion, a herd of elk, some snow, a plop that was my cell phone falling into the river....Check out all photos here

She has a hellish return schedule, 18 hrs from South Africa to Washington and then 2 hours to Denver, all this after racing 3 weeks in a row in 3 continents (Mexico-Korea-SA), needless to say she may be a little "crusty" upon arrival. Last night was fun with the VFAC crew at the Stanley Park version of Beaver Lake, a 1k version of a trail around a lake. As most of the club is racing the Sun Run this weekend in Vancouver (with close to 58 000 other people), it was a fun taper workout.
For me it was 1k, 2k, 2k. The first 1k was done comfortably, and I finished in 3:33. I was a little surprised at how quick it was relative to how I felt. But that was nothing as compared to the next interval.

I appreciate Old Dog New Tricks' comments and well wishes, however unfortunately, I will not be racing in Zurich as originally planned this weekend.
I mentioned why a few days ago, but essentially, I took on a little too much and cooked myself. Last night, as Sonja continued to run with her clinic, I went out for my last true workout prior to Boston. Meandering around Kits and the endowment lands of UBC, I spotted a trail and took it for a ride. I have been on the road so much of later in preparation for the pounding of the Boston roads, that the idea of running on a trail was too inviting. As I am fully in my taper now, everything is a little mixed up. Science tells us that the training effect for any given stress (read: workout) on t… Continue

This is my first attempt ever at a blog post and I am going to use my fiancees post from another site. It is an important post as it was just discovered that she had a massive blood clot in her left leg. I am all of 20 pgs in, so any review would be rather shallow, but I would recommend it, simply because it seems to be quite descriptive of a time and place that many of us would normally associate with, or even really understand.

As much as I love skiing, i'm ready for summer! That said, my volume training still consists of about 50% skiing as I'm still in a transition phase and getting my legs back in running action. Saturday and the Sun
Well, we are getting down to go time. Yesterday, basking in the sun and 20 degree weather, a hint of the summer to come, I hit the track with Jay, Paul, and the VFAC crew. Coach John had a "surprise" workout for us. I remember doing this for my running clinics, and now I see why it was both loved and loathed.
All we knew was that we had 4200m of effort to complete. A 400m warm up (70 seconds) and a mile (4:40) were the first two pieces. After that we were told what the dis… Continue

So while tonight was a day off, yesterday was a day to test out the new shoes I just received from Brooks. The new racing flat, the Racer ST, arrived at my door yesterday and I was eager to give them a go because I was considering them as my Boston shoe. The look awesome and fit well, but they do have a degree of medial posting. I have not worn a posted in shoe in about 6 years, so this feeling was simultaneously odd and familiar. I met up with legendary Beer Miler Jim Finlayson this AM. Don't let anyone tell you that beer milers aren't athletes, this guy can roll. The fact that he is a former national marathon champion and national x-country team member has nothing to do with it.
Is it a bad thing if everything hurts when I cough? I didn't sign up for this...
Ok, maybe I did.
So back to the grind really means getting back into the world of 'hurt'. With 3 strength workouts a week plus the regular volume days to get me back in the groove, I'm a hurtin' unit these days. It really does hurt to cough as my core is mush from Van's workout Monday. Last night, she ran me through a vicious full-body circuit that got every other muscle particle that didn't get hit on Monday. The… Continue

Just briefly.
Saturday was 3 x 5 min fast with 2 min rest and it felt good.
My 30k on Sunday was cruise-y and felt decent. A little dip from 18-25k but that is to be expected, especially when I wasn't taking in any food or gel. The last 5k felt quite good once I started to hit the hills (which is always encouraging). Came in at 2:03 which means that it was 2:53 pace for the marathon, which is good since the weather was terrible and I was purposely not going hard. 2:45 is definitely achievable,… Continue
