How we get muddy

Trail running, mountain running, x-country running, mud running or skyrunning is a variant on running that differs markedly from road running and track running. Trail running generally takes place on hiking trails, most commonly single track trails, although fire roads are not uncommon. A distinguishing characteristic of the trails is that they are often inaccessible by road except at the trail heads. The trails tend to traverse varying terrain; hills, mountains, deserts, forests, and narrow passages are common. Likewise, steep inclines or rough terrain sometimes may require hiking or scrambling. Runners participating in trail runs must often descend these same steep grades. It is not atypical for trail runs to ascend and descend thousands of feet.

Oxygen is over-rated (stolen title from Incline Club)

This should be the motto of the Mount Evans Ascent, which also happens to be 'America's Highest Road Race'. Starting at Echo Lake, just outside of Idaho Springs, Colorado at 10,600 feet (3,230m) , the course climbs for 14.5 miles (23.3 km) up North America's highest paved road. The course takes you through montane, subalpine, and alpine environments to the summit of Mt. Evans at 14,264 ft (4,348m). It is a spectacular venue, with many memorable four-legged spectators, such as Bighorn Sheep, Marm… Continue

Emails, packing, sunnies and miles

Trying to pack everything up here. That means closing some accounts, returning some stuff, training a new staff member for 5430 Sports, sending out masses of emails and getting in some runs on my favourite Boulder trails. Yesterday was: 90 min AM trying to be as hilly as possible; PM 45 min up the Canyon Today: AM: 20 min warm up, then (3min/2EZ; 2hard/2EZ, 1minhard/1EZ)*2, 15 min EZ legs loosened up as I went PM: 42 min with Matt, felt a bit light headed--it was SUPER hot I also met with the… Continue

14er and some wildlife

Yesterday was a strange day.

I am still exhausted after the weekend. Putting on those races takes a lot of energy and some long days, but more than anything, my weak-ass runners body struggles with 4 days of heavy lifting. I have just been feeling off. After telling Barry that I am retu… Continue

Dirty Tales

Western States Endurance Run Cancelled
WS 100 has been officially canceled due to extensive wildfires that have struck northern California in recent days and the health risks these pose to the runners. On top of this, there are some further implications for participants on the 2008 Montrail Ultra Cup still to be resolved.

"That Was the Toughest Run I've Ever Had," Gasps Mt. Washington Winner Eric Blake
Well, it's a 7.6-mile steady vertical climb on a New Hampshire roadway around and up New England's most famous and highest mountain. Blake, a Connecticut athlete who once set a world record for a treadmill marathon and who'd won the Mt. Washington Road Race in 2006, turned away a challenge from Coloradan Clint Wells to prevail again. "I tried to push the pace, because I knew Clint had track speed and was a good finisher," stated Blake, whose 1:00:39 gave him the victory by 11 seconds. The women's winner was Brandy Erholtz of Bailey, Colorado, who was in the race for the first time, took women's honors in 1:11:08, with Kasie Enman of Huntington, Vermont, second in 1:13:26. "Finally my training has paid off!" Erholtz declared. She and the top four men in the Mt. Washington Road Race will be part of the Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team that will compete in the World Mountain Trophy race in Switzerland in September.
